Overview

Lost Cities is a two-player card game where you and your opponent become rival explorers, each funding expeditions to discover lost civilizations. You’ll manage your hand of cards to initiate expeditions in five different colored suits, each representing a distinct location. The core of the game lies in deciding when to commit to an expedition, playing sequentially higher numbered cards within each suit. The tension arises from the fact that starting an expedition costs you points, so you're taking a risk, hoping to play enough high-value cards to recoup your investment and ultimately gain a profit. Each turn presents a tactical choice: play a card to one of your expeditions, discard a card to the discard pile, or take a card from the discard pile.

This simple gameplay loop creates a surprising amount of strategic depth. Carefully observing your opponent's actions, and the cards they discard, provides valuable insight into their plans, allowing you to anticipate their moves and potentially block them by collecting cards they need. The game provides a constant back-and-forth, a delicate balance between pushing your luck to maximize your score and playing defensively to deny your opponent valuable opportunities. Lost Cities offers a satisfying blend of hand management, calculated risk-taking, and strategic thinking in a compact and engaging package. The abstract nature of the game focuses players on the core elements of card play and decision making.
