Overview

In Puerto Rico, players take on the roles of colonial governors competing to earn the most victory points by shipping goods and constructing buildings. Each turn, players choose from a set of roles like “Builder” or “Trader,” granting everyone the corresponding action, but giving a special bonus to the player who selected it. The phase order changes each round, creating a dynamic flow of decision-making and strategy.

Players manage their own boards of plantations and buildings, which must be staffed by colonists to function. Crops are produced, sold, or shipped for points, and doubloons earned can be reinvested in buildings with unique abilities. Victory points come from shipping goods, owning buildings, and staffing powerful large buildings—though players must plan carefully, as shipping points are hidden and the game can end unexpectedly.
