Overview

Tokaido invites you on a serene journey along Japan's East Sea Road. Each player is a traveler, carefully advancing along a shared path, stopping at various picturesque locations to collect souvenirs, sample local cuisine, meet interesting characters, and discover stunning vistas. Movement is dictated by a unique "time track" mechanic; the player furthest behind always takes the next turn, allowing for strategic choices about how far to advance and what opportunities to seize. Will you linger at a temple to make a generous donation, or rush ahead to secure the most lucrative souvenir shop?

The core of Tokaido lies in balancing your desire to experience everything the road has to offer with the need to efficiently collect points. Different stops offer different opportunities, from acquiring sets of panorama cards to earning favor with the Emperor. Each player also possesses a unique character with a special ability, influencing their preferred playstyle and adding a layer of asymmetry to each playthrough. The game fosters a relaxed atmosphere, as players compete not by directly hindering each other, but by strategically optimizing their own journey to become the most cultured and contented traveler on the Tokaido road.
